Tangaroa Blue Foundation

Tangaroa Blue Foundation works to prevent and remove marine debris. We inspire action and empower people, organisations, businesses and governments to make data driven decisions to improve systems, processes and behaviours to stop the flow of litter at its source

Learn about us

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land and sea Country on which we live, learn and work, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and future.

Volunteers across Western Australia are coming together in October for the 20th Anniversary marine debris clean-up!

Whether you’re a family, individual, business, community group or school – you can get involved. Help us to clean-up the WA coastline and gather data to prevent marine debris! Want to run your own clean-up, or help as a volunteer?

Marine Debris Information

What is Marine Debris?

Marine debris is rubbish that washes onto our coastline and into our waterways. Over 75% of what we remove from our beaches is made of plastic.

AMDI Database

We record data on the marine debris we find, so we can identify ways to stop litter at its source. You can use the new AMDI app to record your clean-up.

MARINE DEBRIS IMPACT

Volunteers, organisations and community groups from around the country join forces to find practical solutions to reducing ocean plastics.

With an estimated 40,000 pieces of plastic floating in every square kilometre of the ocean, marine debris is considered one of the major environmental issues impacting our world. The rubbish degrading in our oceans creates toxic effects for humans and animals.

We coordinate the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI), an on-ground network of volunteers, communities, organisations and agencies around the country monitoring the levels, impacts and sources of marine debris along their stretch of coastline.

We're excited to announce Containers for Change WA We're excited to announce Containers for Change WA as our newest sponsor for the 2024 WA Beach Clean-up!

"We're proud to be a part of the 2024 WA Beach Clean-Up with Tangaroa Blue Foundation. Earlier this year, the WARRRL team volunteered to clean up Wadjemup Rottnest Island, picking up litter that had washed ashore or been discarded along its iconic beaches and bays. Our staff collected almost 55kg of litter, including 10¢ bottles and cans that had gone unreturned." Tim Cusack, CEO WA Return Recycle Renew (WARRRL) - Scheme Coordinator for Containers for Change WA.

Containers for Change WA is the state's container deposit scheme. People can return accepted containers for a refund, offering a trusted recycling solution for 10¢ containers while helping to reduce litter. To date, 3.3 billion containers have been returned, and almost $13 million has been donated to schools, community groups, businesses, and individuals.

The Tangaroa Blue Leadership Team are bursting wit The Tangaroa Blue Leadership Team are bursting with new ideas and ways to create impact after their trip to Sydney to meet with the Tangaroa Blue Foundation Board (accompanied by Willow, a very good dog).

We spent five days discussing everything from our values as a charity to our impact goals to tackle marine debris head-on. One big highlight was sharing all the fantastic work our Tangaroa Blue and ReefClean volunteers have helped us deliver over the last year.

2024 marks the 20th anniversary of Tangaroa Blue Foundation, and as we look to the future, we're full of drive and enthusiasm for the next step in our journey for a healthy ocean!

🤔 What is a FAD? And no, we don't mean a short- 🤔 What is a FAD? And no, we don't mean a short-lived trend!

Fish aggregating devices (FADs) are human-made floating structures used to attract fish. Some FADs are designed to be anchored to the ocean floor, and others drift. Depending on their structure, some can be easily lost at sea and end up as ghost gear.

A Western and Central Pacific Ocean study found that more than 90% of drifting FADS are never retrieved (Escalle et al. 2020). They found:

🔹42.1% were classified as lost
🔹7.4% were beached
🔹20.0% were sunk, stolen or had malfunctioned
🔹21.1% were deactivated by the fishing company and left drifting at sea
🔹Only 9.4% were retrieved.

The final sunrise on the Coral Sea voyage as we st The final sunrise on the Coral Sea voyage as we steam towards Cairns!

🤯 The Coral Sea team have removed an epic 110 bags of marine debris weighing 1286kg, including:

🔹814 Plastic Drink Bottles
🔹391 Rubber Thongs
🔹213 Plastic containers
🔹101 Buoys
🔹10 FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices)
🔹8 GPS Tuna Trackers

This big haul of marine debris will no longer harm marine life around the Coral Sea. Sadly, all of this material is destined for deep burial due to biosecurity restrictions - another reason why it's so vital to prevent marine debris at its source - before it reaches the ocean.

A big shout out to the North Marine crew, who detected a ghost net hanging on the reef on North East Cay and successfully removed it 💪

We heard from Project Coordinator Ian, "What a difference a couple of hours makes in the Coral Sea. One moment, the sun is shining with almost glass-out conditions, then in the blink of an eye, the wind gets up, and a rain squall comes through. But not before we removed another 116 kg from our final site. The preliminary total is looking like around 1.2 tonnes removed!"
