About Us

Protecting Australia’s marine environment through the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Network since 2004

TANGAROA BLUE FOUNDATION AND THE AUSTRALIAN MARINE DEBRIS INITIATIVE

Tangaroa Blue Foundation is an Australian registered charity focused on the health of our marine environment which coordinates the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI), an on-ground network of volunteers, communities, organisations and agencies around the country monitoring the impacts of marine debris along their stretch of coastline.

Since the AMDI program started in 2004, more than 24 million pieces of marine debris have been removed from the Australian coastline and data on this collated and input into the AMDI Database.

Our network of volunteers, community groups, organisations and Tangaroa Blue Foundation team members work tirelessly to:

  • Remove what’s already out there: Removing rubbish from the environment restores the natural state and mitigates the toxic effects of plastics degrading in the environment.
  • Stop the flow of litter at the source: More effective than cleaning up is preventing rubbish from ending up in the environment in the first place.
  • Reduce the amount of waste produced: Waste that does not exist cannot become a problem. Our team works with different stakeholders to promote and implement best-practice sustainable solutions and true circular economy models.

SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES

Tangaroa Blue Foundation can provide support to communities, organisations, agencies and schools including training, clean-up materials and logistical support, educational resources and analysis of the debris they are finding. This feedback has provided valuable data on the types and amounts of marine debris impacting sections of coast and also resulted in communities having real on-ground success stories in the reduction of marine debris impacting their site.
