Reefclean

A project aimed to remove and prevent marine debris along the Great Barrier Reef region

reefClean.landscape.logo.CMYK

ReefClean is funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Trust and is delivered by Tangaroa Blue Foundation in partnership with a variety of organizations. Launched in early 2019, the project aims to remove and prevent marine debris in the Great Barrier Reef region.

A program of targeted and integrated marine debris activities, ReefClean has reduced the volume of debris generated in or entering the Great Barrier Reef that may impact threatened and migratory species and ecosystems. It has also increased awareness in Reef catchment communities about marine debris and actions they can undertake to prevent litter from entering Reef waterways.

This has occurred through:

  • Community clean-up events
  • Site monitoring
  • The Great Barrier Reef Clean-up event annually in October
  • Community Source Reduction Plan Workshops
  • School and community engagement activities
  • Data analysis
  • Disaster management clean-ups
  • Microplastics surveys
Keep an eye on our events calendar for information on our activities.

Tangaroa Blue Foundation acknowledges the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the Great Barrier Reef and their strong and continuing connections to Country.

2019 - 2023

The initial five year program funded by the Federal Government’s Reef Trust, started in 2019. The project aimed to remove and prevent marine debris in the Great Barrier Reef region through to 2023.

To do this, Tangaroa Blue Foundation partnered with several organisations to achieve success: Reef Check Australia, Capricornia Catchments, Eco Barge Clean Seas, OceanWatch Australia, South Cape York Catchments and AUSMAP.

The initial ReefClean program was delivered by Tangaroa Blue Foundation and more than 400 stakeholders from 2019-2023.

2024 - Today

In 2024, the ReefClean program received funding from the Federal Government’s Reef Trust for a further three year program. This program builds on and complements the initial program as well as existing programs and activities operating across the Great Barrier Reef and its catchment.

The 2024 – 2027 program aims to:

  • reduce the volume of debris generated in or entering the Great Barrier Reef, which may impact listed threatened and migratory species, such as dugongs and turtles, and the Reef’s ecosystems.
  • Increase awareness in Reef catchment communities about the issue of marine debris and actions they can take.
  • Embrace the circular economy principles to divert marine debris into ReefCycle and Rig Recycle programs.
  • Provide an integrated framework for addressing marine debris that connects all relevant stakeholders and provides scalable resources, case studies, and solutions.

Whilst the @tangaroablue and ReefClean team may ha Whilst the @tangaroablue and ReefClean team may have been on a well deserved Christmas break these last 2 weeks, that does not mean the debris stops coming ashore.

A huge shout out to Team Turtle CQ volunteers who walk the Wild Cattle beach daily (8km round trip) where they monitor turtle nesting. In the process they were able to clean-up the area and hand over 3 full bags of debris (weighing just under 20kg) to us for entry into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (#AMDI) Database.

Sadly, there is no rest when it comes to marine debris, but we are extremely grateful for all who continue to assist and make a difference. 💙

16kg mostly containing foreign plastic drinks bottles, originating from the ships entering our harbour have now been removed and sorted into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (#AMDI) Database.

Where would we be without our amazing volunteers who never rest! 💙

Our hearts go out to everyone grappling with the i Our hearts go out to everyone grappling with the impact of the floods. If you find yourself in an affected area and it's safe for you to do so, we would greatly appreciate your assistance in creating a marine debris flood impact map. This map will be instrumental in organising clean-up events once the initial emergency response phase concludes.

To contribute, please follow the link to a Google form below. Here you can upload images of the affected site, document the location, and provide a rating using our marine debris rating tool (examples provided).

We also have staff out this week doing an assessment and once we've created a marine debris hotspot map, we'll begin organising clean-up events. The details, including locations and dates, will be posted on our social media and website calendars for volunteers to attend and support.

Please prioritise your safety, and we hope to be out there to help as soon as possible. 💙

Project Coordinator, Attie, visited monitoring sit Project Coordinator, Attie, visited monitoring sites along the Cassowary Coast region earlier this month - Hull Heads and Flying Fish Point.

Although the beaches in this region aren't heavily littered, the team collected just over 21kg of debris, covering around 4km of shoreline. They managed to recycle and reuse some fishing gear thanks to our volunteers!

New volunteers and Mamu Aboriginal Corporation Rangers also joined the group to learn about monitoring protocols and maintain Mamu Land & Sea Country.

As usual a huge thank you to all our partners and volunteers, we couldn't do it without you, and it would not be nearly so much fun!

We were welcomed on to Gundang Yadhaykenu Country We were welcomed on to Gundang Yadhaykenu Country to complete the final round of 2023 monitoring at Fly Point.

The sun was out in full force so luckily, due to recent high tides, the beach had less debris present than usual. Only 31kg was collected compared to 158kg in September! 👏 This highlights how important monitoring activities are to create a dataset which can be used to analyse trends and patterns in marine debris.

Thank you once again to the Apudthama Rangers for the assistance, yarns and battling it out in the sun. It sure was nice to hear the thunder rolling in after such a hot day.

Tangaroa Blue is sending our support and thoughts to everyone affected by the massive rain and flooding event impacting the FNQ region! These floods are the biggest that have been recorded in a century, and sadly it's not over yet!

Thanks to everyone who has already messaged us, we will be organising ReefClean clean-ups, but the current focus still remains on the immediate emergency response efforts for the time being.

Family outing cleaning Secret Beach, Townsville! Family outing cleaning Secret Beach, Townsville!

Project Coordinator Georgia and her family from Victoria faced wind, rain, and humidity during our quarterly monitoring at Secret Beach, Townsville. Despite the challenging weather, they powered through and successfully removed around 6kg of debris!

🚮 The carpark area, unfortunately, becomes a dumping ground due to the absence of bins and they uncovered a significant amount of fishing line, bait bags, and cans.

Awesome team effort for a cleaner beach! 💙

With the help of the Jabalbina Rangers they were able to remove 174kg off the beach and ferry it back to Cooktown to be sorted and disposed of.

They were joined by local Port Douglas local artist Jenny Edmondson, who turns marine debris into art! We can’t wait to see what she does with the items found from this trip.

Wrapping up the day, they swung by @the.lureshop, home to a Rig Recycle bin, where they gathered materials dropped off by locals for recycling and repurposing.

Life as a Tangaroa Blue coordinator is anything but dull!

Have you come across a piece of marine debris and Have you come across a piece of marine debris and have NO idea what it is?

We often receive photos asking what certain items are so they can be entered into the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (#AMDI) Database.

With so many different and obscure items found in and around our waterways, it is understandably confusing at times to know how to label something.

Here are some tips on what to do if you come across an unknown item.

1️⃣ Look through the Marine Debris Identification Manual.
This Manual has a wealth of information on different items, categories and other information designed to make data entry easier for everyone.
https://www.tangaroablue.org/?s=identification+manual

2️⃣ Post it on social media and tag us!
We love seeing all the clean-ups and hard work put in by the community, so show us what you've been up to and ask us questions through our Facebook and Instagram channels.

3️⃣ Use the Google Lens App
Google Lens uses image recognition to identify and bring up information on objects. So why not try it on any unknown items you find during your clean-ups!

4️⃣ Email the Data team directly - data@tangaroablue.org
The team has nearly seen it all, so there aren't many items that will stump them.
If all else fails, you can enter the item as an unidentified item and upload a photo in the AMDI app as well.
